Community Yard Sale Article

In the next following paragraphs, I will tell you how to start your garage sale. It is not as easy as it may seem. Of course it will be fun, but remember that at the end of the day your final objective will be to make money. Want to know how to be the tycoon of garage sales? Just keep reading…

News flash, in order to do a garage sale, you need to sell things. Do you have any idea what you want to sell? You might have all the music in the world, you can have the entire neighborhood in your back yard but if you don’t have anything to sell you will make a big zero.

Go trough your things and think of things you want to get rid of but that might attract some. You can also make your yard sale even more fun just by selling things of the same category. For example baseball caps. If some of you have the sense of art in your blood you can build a sign that says: now entering the twilight zone.

The more the merrier, that’s what they always say. In order to split the duties, have some of your friends or family help you set up your garage sale. Most of them will get a kick out of it and might even bring some of their stuff to sell along the way. You’ll make a day of it…

Now that the easy part is out of the way, let’s get technical. You need a permit to do a yard sale. As the saying goes, you want to play, you have to pay. But do not lose sleep over any of this. Most cities will ask you to obey the rules and ask you when or where your garage sale will be held.

Let’s be clear on one thing, if you don’t tell your neighbors about your yard sale, nobody will know that you even planned an event like this. The more people know about it, the more chance there is to rake in the rewards. Unfortunately some licenses have policies on what you can do to advertise your garage sale. My advice to you is to use your imagination. Flyers do not have to be boring. Use color, you colored cardboard, use balloons, music, anything that will the people’s attention to your yard sale. If you can afford it, the local newspaper is perfect to announce your event.

Do not be afraid to lay down the laws. After all, the garage sale will be held at your house and not all people are angels. There are thieves anywhere, anytime. If some people have large coats or big handbags, you can ask them politely to leave these items in their car or to put them in a carefully designed area so that you protect yourself from any possible theft. Don’t let anyone in your house and have a long mirror for the people who might want to buy clothes.

If you want your customers to give a good opinion of you, be polite, courteous and smile. This will really impress them. Have a happy selling.
